NI Colour Series Returns to Garvagh Forest

The only Forest in NI to feature a pyramid!

We can confirm that the fourth Colour Series event will be held in Garvagh Forest on  Saturday  25 August 2018 offering all the usual range of courses to suit all ages and abilities.

Garvagh Forest was first mapped for orienteering in 1980 and was used extensively for club and regional events ( including a NI Night competition during a total eclipse of the moon! ) for the following 18 years until a huge storm devastated almost half of the mature trees. However, over the intervening years much of the new planting has matured, opening up large areas to good old fashioned forest orienteering again. The forest contains a mix of  mature sections of fast runnable forest, areas of beautiful  deciduous trees, plenty of summer vegetation which is definitely to be avoided and a few hills to test runners on the longer courses.

The forest is also popular with local mountain bikers and there are numerous tracks through both mature trees and areas of dense vegetation. These latter  tracks are very useful for navigating through difficult areas. A team of NWOC members has  recently resurveyed the forest  and our thanks go to Anthony McGonigle for his expert mapping skills in updating the map for the forthcoming competition.

If you haven’t been a regular competitor at the Colour Series events we highly recommend you come along to Garvagh to experience forest orienteering at its best,  in wonderful terrain, and if you need any further enticement, there is also a pyramid within the forest which might just be a control point on your course.
