Learmount 2025 NICS 1 – Still Standing!

Learmount Castle and former Youth Hostel 2025

The Northern Ireland Colour series for 2025 kicks off on the 1st March at Learmount Wood. This fascinating old country estate on the banks of the River Faughan is in many ways the spiritual home of the North West Orienteering Club. In the 1970’s and 80’s the Youth Hostel acted as an informal outdoor education centre and training base / club house for the club in its early years.

Familiar faces past and present

Learmount was one of the first professionally printed maps in Northern Ireland featuring the novelty of three colour printing (if you count black)!

This map from the mid 1970’s was a joint production between the Venture Scouts and North West Orienteering Club members.

It is remarkable how good this map is and how much of the modern contour detail is captured in a simple clear manner.

The 1980’s brought 5 colours, contours and an expansion of the mapped area.

In 2025 the area is still well used by walkers and runners and the Learmount Community Centre at the eastern edge links it to Park and the world beyond.

The winter storms have taken their toll and many of the mature trees, particularly the Scots Pines have been laid low. Thankfully enough open forest and tracks remain and the North West Orienteering Club once again looks forward to welcoming competitors from all over Northern Ireland to our favourite forest!
