NI Colour Series 1 Learmount
1 March, 2025 @ 10:30 – 15:00
Getting There
The easiest approach is to follow the road signs to Park from the A6 dual carriageway. Park is signposted off the A6 at the first junction west of Dungiven where it crosses under the B74.

Parking
Parking will be behind Learmount Coumminity where we have accees to additional overflow hard standing. Please leave the spaces in front of the centre for local people and park as directed.
Venue
Learmount Wood is located adjacent to Park village which nestles at the foot of Sawel Mountain. The forest boasts a mixture of pine and deciduous trees, including a lovely section of Beech and a wide variety of habitats. The paths in and around the forest are not overly manicured which does tend to present the forest in a more rugged and natural light. Other interesting features of the forest, apart from the beauty and tranquillity of the woods, are the Castle and The River Faughan.
Storm Damage

Despite extensive storm damage the wood is generally runnable. Courses have been planned to skirt the worst areas of damage. Where runners have to pass between felled areas red and white tape have been use to mark the best path. These points will be shown on courses using the optional crossing point symbol.
There are many individual trees down and runners will need to negotiate these on most woodland sections.
Solid areas of storm damage are indicated with a dark green hatch overprint and should be considered totally impassible.
Should there be a Met Office yellow warning or above for wind on the day of the event – the event will be postponed.

Map
The map has had a major update in November 2022 to reflect the forest’s maturity and increased runnability. It also has been updated in February this year to reflect the damage from the winter storms.
The scale for all courses will be 1:7500.
Road crossings
There are no road crossings for the white, yellow, orange and light green courses.
The short green and green courses have a 30m route along the grass verge of a public road (facing oncoming traffic).
The blue and brown course also have this section plus two more public road crossings. The final crossing is over a fast straight section of the road and a three minute timed-out has been provided to allow competitors to carefully walk across.
Toilets
Toilet facilities will be available in the community centre.
Hazards
- Storm damage – see section above.
- Parents should be aware the area is bounded by a river which flows very powerfully in flood. All course will have sections along this river.
- Green and Short Green runners have a 30m route along the grass verge of a public road (facing oncoming traffic),
- Courses from Light Green upward will cross an small un-bridged stream.
- Brown and Blue runners will cross public roads on their course. Traffic will be light but some vehicles may be travelling at speed.
