Planner’s Notes
Classic forest orienteering on a newly resurveyed map. Despite significant damage in recent storms the area has matured well and there are several new interesting areas to add fresh challenge.
The area is heavily used by mountain bikers and it is in the nature of their sport to continuously create new paths. The map is up to date as of 15 March 2026, but it is possible that additional paths will have appeared by the date of the event.
Warm up run area
The forest north of the A2 is not being used by courses for this event. Runners who would like an extended warm up run can use this area. A few blank maps will be avilable for loan on a first come first served basis. You must use the underpass to cross the A2.
Toilets
There are no toilets at the event. However public toilets are available in the centre of Ballykelly just off the Glenhead Road (see map above).
Hazards
- This is a popular mountain bike area and while we have kept MTB groups informed about the event, we cannot guarentee that individual riders will not be present on their purpose made path network or on the forest roads.
- There are many small to medium areas of tree storm damage in the forest. These are mapped as forest fight. However individual trees are also down in places and may need to be carefully circumnavigated.
- The busy and fast A2 splits the area in two. If you need to cross this road for any reason please use the pedestrian underpass.
- Parents please be aware the walk to the start is on a greenway path alongside the busy A2.
