Blue green algae
There is currently blue green algae in the River Bann which bounds the south of the competitor area. There is no reason for runners to go near the water so the main hazard is to dogs. Subsequently we have changed our “all dogs on leads” rule for this event to “no dogs on courses”. Access to the beach is as normal.
Walk to and from the start /finish
Runners are reminded that there is a 1.3km walk to the start along the beach to marker Post 10 where a National Trust nature trail enters the dunes. Be aware this section of the beach is also open to cars.
Please park at the east end of the beach near the entrance (close to download and enquiries) and do not be tempted to drive to the start. There is a spring tide on Saturday and the sand is soft!
The download is at the east end of the beach in the main parking area and all competitors must report there even if they do not complete their courses.
Exposure and heat
At time of writing (Thursday 31st August) the forecast for Portstewart is for sun with light cloud and light winds. However the beach in particular is very exposed and competitors are encouraged to carry a cagoule which they can leave at the start / finish area. Be aware that if there is any sun at all the dunes heat rapidly and running there can be very dehydrating. Runners should therefore ensure they are well hydrated before starting and we recommend carrying a water bottle which can be left at the start /finish area.
