Despite significant damage in recent storms the area has matured well and there are several new interesting areas to add fresh challenge. \n\n\n\nThe area is heavily used by mountain bikers and it is in the nature of their sport to continuously create new paths. The map is up to date as of 15 March 2026\, but it is possible that additional paths will have appeared by the date of the event. \n\n\n\nWarm up run area\n\n\n\nThe forest north of the A2 is not being used by courses for this event. Runners who would like an extended warm up run can use this area. A few blank maps will be avilable for loan on a first come first served basis. You must use the underpass to cross the A2. \n\n\n\n\nToilets\n\n\n\nThere are no toilets at the event. However public toilets are available in the centre of Ballykelly just off the Glenhead Road (see map above). \n\n\n\n\nHazards\n\n\n\n\nThis is a popular mountain bike area and while we have kept MTB groups informed about the event\, we cannot guarentee that individual riders will not be present on their purpose made path network or on the forest roads.\n\n\n\nThere are many small to medium areas of tree storm damage in the forest. These are mapped as forest fight. However individual trees are also down in places and may need to be carefully circumnavigated.\n\n\n\nThe busy and fast A2 splits the area in two. If you need to cross this road for any reason please use the pedestrian underpass.\n\n\n\nParents please be aware the walk to the start is on a greenway path alongside the busy A2.\n\n\n\n\nOfficials\n\n\n\n\nOrganiser: Ruth Blair\n\n\n\nController: David Blair\n\n\n\nPlanner: Des Fletcher\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nYour Name (required)\n \n \nYour Email (required)\n \n \nSubject\n \n \nYour Message\n \n \nBy using this form you agree with the storage and handling of your data by this website. SUMMARY:NI Classic Championships 2025
DESCRIPTION:Carntogher 1st November 2025\n\n\n\n\n\nThe slopes of Carntogher mountain will provide complex and interesting terrain\n\n\n\n\nLocation (live map) \n\n\n Google Maps Wordpress \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe 2025 Long Distance Championships will return to Carntogher mountain in the east Sperrins. The event is less than 1 hour from Belfast via the M2 / A6. \n\n\n\nAlthough only a few miles from Glenshane Pass the terrain here is completely different and as you can see below it features a wealth of subtle contour detail. In addition to the natural features\, the area has a network of unusual earthbanks which add landscape interest and linear features for the less technical courses. The east-facing slopes feature rich contour detail. This year the courses will visit some new areas of hillside and will all finish through some fields with interesting line features. \n\n\n\nThe lower area here is drier and rocky while the upper area is peaty and wet\n\n\n\nIn recent years the local Community Association has been instrumental in establishing car parking\, access\, and walking trails which explore the history of this unique landscape and we will make good use of these for our event. \n\n\n\nGetting There\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAn Carn132A Tirkane Road\, Maghera\, BT46 5NH \n\n\n\nParking\n\n\n\nParking will be at the An Carn Community Centre and Cafe. Please do not park directly in front of the centre (this is reserved for normal customers) and use the three areas shown on the map below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEnquiries\n\n\n\nEnquiries\, hire dipper pick up and car key drop will be at the An Carn Centre. \n\n\n\nSI Air / Beacon Mode / Safety Controls\n\n\n\nThe controls will be SI Air enabled (beacon mode)\, but the start and finish must be punched in the traditional fashion. \n\n\n\nA safety radio control (241) on courses 1-6 will track runners as they descend from the higher mountain section. \n\n\n\nBus Shuttle\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBus to Start\n\n\n\nA shuttle bus will take competitors to the start. This will leave adjacent to event enquiries. It will take 10 minutes to drive to the drop-off. There is then a further 20 minute uphill walk to the start. \n\n\n\nBus from Finish\n\n\n\nFrom about 12:45 a bus will pick up runners 300m from the finish. \n\n\n\nRunners finishing before this time may need to walk one mile to be picked up by the bus returning from the start drop off. \n\n\n\nWeather / Safety \n\n\n\nThe start for all courses is at 800 feet (240m) and the area rises to over 1500 feet (460m). So low visibility\, high winds and exposed conditions are possible. Should severe weather be forecast we will postpone the the event. \n\n\n\nWe will be requiring all competitors to carry / wear a cagoule. As it will be cold on the mountain some runners may also wish to carry a hat and gloves. \n\n\n\nWhistles are also compulsory. There will be a small tent at the start. \n\n\n\nPlease read the map notes and hazards at the foot of the page. This is an unusual area and rock and water features require extra care. \n\n\n\nToilets\n\n\n\nThere are toilets in the An Carn Centre. \n\n\n\nThere are no dogs allowed anywhere on the competition area. \n\n\n\nStart and Finish\n\n\n\nFirst start 11:00 – last start 13:00. \n\n\n\nCourses Close at 15:00. \n\n\n\nStart Lists (now live)\n\n\n\nStart Lists \n\n\n\nPlease try to keep to your start time if possible. However it is a punching start and we will aim to fit people in and and minimise competitor waiting time on the mountain. \n\n\n\nMap\n\n\n\nAll courses will use a 1:10\,000 map. This has been surveyed by Peel Land Surveys spring 2022 and updated summer 2025. \n\n\n\nCourse Details:\n\n\n\nCourseLengthClimbClasses17.7280mM21L27.1280mM35\, M4036.3260mM45\, M50\, M20\, M18\, W21L45.7210mM55\, M21S\, M16\, M6054.6210mW20\, W18\, W35\, W4064.2160mM65\, W45\, W5073.3100mM70\, W55\, W21S\, W16\, W6083.2100mM75\, W65\, W70\, Green92.360mW75\, M80\, M85\, M90\, W80\, W85\, W90102.8100mW14\, M14\, Light Green111.860mM12\, W12\, Orange121.450mM10\, W10\, Yellow\n\n\n\n\n\nEntries and Fees\n\n\n\n\nEntries are now closed. \n\n\n\n\nEnter Online\n\n\n\nView Entry Lists\n\n\n\nStart Lists\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJuniors £12 (NIOA/BOF/IOA members £10)\n\n\n\nFull-time Students £12 (NIOA/BOF/IOA members £10)\n\n\n\nSeniors £25 (NIOA /BOF/IOA members £20)\n\n\n\nFamily multiple individual runs £62 (NIOA /BOF/IOA members £50)\n\n\n\n\n\nYellow\, Orange\, Light Green\, and Green colour courses are also available. These are pre-entry only. \n\n\n\nMapping Notes \n\n\n\nThe higher areas of Carntogher has many old peat cuttings which in places is complex. To best represent this the mapper has modified the steep bank symbol by reducing the length of the tags and in places removing the tags all together. In the terrain these are most commonly a 1m drop and fairly easy to cross\, though in places they are even smaller than this but always distinct features in the terrain. Sometimes the cuttings face each other and are too close to map so here the wet ditch symbol has been used to represent the line of cuttings. However in other locations the symbol can be a traditional ditch often with flowing water. \n\n\n\nThere are many patches of gorse across the area and in most cases these have been shown as Vegetation Fight but occasionally when younger Vegetation Walk. Only the most distinct trees and bushes are represented. \n\n\n\nKnoll symbols are used to indicate not only very small hills as we would expect in Ireland\, but also to indicate high points on hills. \n\n\n\nThe unusual geology/hydrology of the area results in water channels cutting below the surface vegetation in places. This makes small streams more difficult to see and indeed you may hear water courses (or linear marshes) before you see them! Extra care is required. \n\n\n\nThe marsh symbol tends to be a better guide to vegetation type than the actual wetness of the ground. By Irish mountain standards\, the area is relatively dry (probably because of the unusual hydrology mentioned above). \n\n\n\nPlanning Notes\n\n\n\nWe are using a high start which is up a track to the east of the map. This will provide all competitors with some new terrain but will also reduce the climb for courses 9 – 12. A minibus will transport all competitors towards the start but there will be a 20 minute walk uphill to the start from the drop off point. The start has been selected to suit courses but is awkward for the organising team.  Please arrive on time and co-operate with the officials. \n\n\n\nCourses 1 – 8 will get over to the complex terrain on the west of the map. This area is covered in stone and rock. We have decided that it is safer for competitors to climb up this area rather than run down through it. This will result in some climb on all these courses towards the end of your course. \n\n\n\nCourses have been planned slightly shorter than normal to allow for the climb. Thank you for supporting our event. We hope you enjoy your run. \n\n\n\nCafe / Shop\n\n\n\nThere is a good cafe in the An Carn Centre providing meals\, snacks and coffee. There is also a shop with a range of hand crafted goods. Please support these community enterprises. \n\n\n\n\nPrize Giving\n\n\n\nThis will be in the An Carn Centre as close to 3pm as possible. \n\n\n\n\nDogs\n\n\n\nNo dogs are allowed in the competition area. \n\n\n\nHazards\n\n\n\n\nThe area is open\, exposed and mountainous. You must bring a cagoule and carry or wear it throughout the event.\n\n\n\nSome of the faster hillside areas contain many small rocks. Please exercise care\, particularly while descending.\n\n\n\nMost of the competition area is over 800 feet so low visibility is very possible. Ensure you carry a compass and be prepared to lose height to the south should you need to retire.\n\n\n\nBe aware that the unusual hydrology of the area results in some small sinkholes and linear trenches forming in the surface peat.\n\n\n\nWhistles must be carried.\n\n\n\n\nAll participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety \n\n\n\n\nEvent Query\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n	Contact NWOC\n&nbsp\nYour Name (required)\n \n \n	Your Email (required)\n \nYour Query\n \n \n	\n \n	Name and email address will only be used to respond to your query\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOfficials\n\n\n\n\nOrganiser: Ruth Blair\n\n\n\nController: Des Fletcher\n\n\n\nPlanner: Anthony McGonigle

Please park at the east end of the beach where you will find the event enquiries at the NWOC camper van (with club feather flag). \n\n\n\nEvent Layout / Hazards\n\n\n\nThis year both start and finish are close to the parking area\n\n\n\nNT “Come and Try it” activity for beginner / groups\n\n\n\nIn addition to the normal NI Colour Series competition there will be a parallel “Come and Try It” activity based on the white course controls aimed at groups and non competitive beginners. Do Not Use the SI Entries links below for this but do book a map using a form on the page below: \n\n\n\n\nPortstewart Dunes Orienteering Come and Try It\n\n\n\n\nColour Series Competition Entries\n\n\n\nEntries now closed – but we have a few spare maps on some courses. So contact us if you would like to run and we will see what we can do! \n\n\n\n\nEnter Online\n\n\n\nEdit your Entry\n\n\n\nView Entry Lists\n\n\n\n\nNB Entries close Sunday 31st August 2025 at 21:30 \n\n\n\nEvent Enquiries \n\n\n\nThese will operate from 10:30am. Having entered online you can go directly to the start. Runners who have hired a dipper can collect them from Enquiries/ Download. \n\n\n\nElectronic Punching\n\n\n\nSI dippers (not SI Air) are available for hire and can be booked in the entry system.  \n\n\n\nSportident Electronic punching with beacon mode enabled for SI Air on all controls but not on the start and finish boxes which must be “dipped” in the traditional manner. \n\n\n\nStart Times\n\n\n\nThe pre-entry start blocks are from from 11.30am to 13.00pm. \n\n\n\nWe should also be able to provide starts from 11:00 to 11:30 on request for those who need to run earlier. Please use the contact form below for this or other queries.  \n\n\n\n\nStart \n\n\n\nThe start will be 400m away\, down the beach and a short distance into the dunes. \n\n\n\n\nFinish \n\n\n\nThe finish is adjacent car parking area. The Download point will be close by. All competitors must report to the Download point even if they do not complete their courses.  \n\n\n\nCourses Close \n\n\n\nCourse close at 3.00pm. Please ensure you have returned to download by this time to be checked in\, even if you have not completed your course. \n\n\n\nWater\n\n\n\nPlease bring your own water and make sure you are fully hydrated before starting. Even on a windy sunny day temperatures in the dunes hollows can soar and running in these conditions can be very dehydrating. \n\n\n\nEntry Fees\n\n\n\n MemberNon-MemberSenior (aged 21 or over)£12£16Junior or Student£6£8Beginner Group*£6£8Maximum charge for a family**£30£40\n\n\n\nMember means you are a member of a BOF\, IOA or IOF Orienteering Club. \n\n\n\n*For beginner groups doing a course together\, you only need to enter one name per map and SI Card. You can amend the “group name” at Registration on the day if you want. \n\n\n\n**If you are entering a family members in multiple classes and it comes to more than £25 (£30 for non-member) then please contact the organiser after you have paid for the individual Senior\, or Junior/Student entries and we will arrange refund of the difference. Parents accompanying children go free. \n\n\n\nMaps\n\n\n\nA waterproof 1:5000 map of Portstewart Strand (updated summer 2025) will be used by all courses. \n\n\n\nCrossing Points\n\n\n\nMost courses will cross fences which divide the area.  There are several gates in each. These are highlighted with the purple crossing symbol and must be used. Fences and walls must not be climbed. \n\n\n\nCourse Details\n\n\n\nCourseControlsLengthWhite  11 0.9 kmYellow111.3 kmOrange132.0 kmLight Green142.1 kmShort Green142.3 kmGreen183.8 kmBlue224.7 kmBrown266.0 km\n\n\n\nDogs\n\n\n\nNo dogs are allowed in the competition area (see note below on blue – green algae). \n\n\n\nToilets\n\n\n\nToilets are located by the National Trust booth at the beach entrance. \n\n\n\nTerrain Notes\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPortstewart is classic sand dunes Orienteering terrain. The area is unusual in that it is bounded by the sea to the north and by the River Bann to the south and west. \n\n\n\nThere are a number of fences in the dunes and the marked gate crossings must be used. \n\n\n\nBlue green algae\n\n\n\nThere is currently blue green algae in the River Bann which bounds the south of the competitor area. There is no reason for runners to go near the water so the main hazard is to dogs. Therefore no dogs are allowed on on courses. \n\n\n\nGolf Course\n\n\n\nAll courses\, except white and yellow\, will briefly pass in sight of the golf course and a “tee-off” point. Please proceed quietly and be aware of the possibility of a ball accidentally crossing into the Dune area. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHazards:\n\n\n\n\nParents should be aware that there will be regular car traffic driving up and down the beach past our parking area and some traffic all the way along the walk to the start. Please supervise children accordingly.\n\n\n\nIf the weather is sunny the dunes can become very hot (particularly in the hollows) and dehydration is possible. Runners should ensure they are well hydrated before starting and bring their own water bottle.\n\n\n\nIn windy and wet conditions the dunes are very exposed and the wearing of cagoules may be advised.\n\n\n\nLonger courses will pass in sight of Portstewart Golf course (which is of course out of bounds). Please be aware of the possibility of a driven ball crossing into the dunes from the golf course and exercise appropriate caution.\n\n\n\n\n\nOfficials\n\n\n\n\nOrganiser: Charlie Reid (assistant Organiser: Rachel Reid)\n\n\n\nController: David Blair\n\n\n\nPlanner: Ros Walker\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Queries\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nYour Name (required)\n \n \nYour Email (required)\n \n \nSubject\n \n \nYour Message\n \n \nBy using this form you agree with the storage and handling of your data by this website. SUMMARY:Irish Individual Championship 2025
DESCRIPTION:Classic Race\n\n\n\nMagilligan dunes are bounded to the north by the Atlantic ocean fringed by a six mile long beach. To the south lies Lough Foyle\, a tidal sea lough\, and the two converging shores join at Magilligan Point. \n\n\n\nThe classic race will take place in the central section of these dunes. The beach will not feature on the courses\, but can be visited afterwards accessed from Benone or Downhill. There is also the option of visiting Mussenden Temple and Downhill Demesne – a singular cliff top fantasy built by the eccentric “Mitred Earl” of Bristol. \n\n\n\nSouth East end of the 6 mile long Magilligan beach is overlooked by the Mussenden Temple (NT)\n\n\n\nThe area is a mix of intricate dunes\, interspersed with more level areas\, which afford some very fast running. The map was fully updated in September 2024. \n\n\n\nEvent Location\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMagilligan East \n\n\n\nTravel Directions\n\n\n\nFrom Limavady take the A2 to Bellarena and Benone. The event is about ten miles north of the town and should take about twenty minutes by car. The competition area will be clearly sign-posted to the left off this main road. \n\n\n\nFrom Coleraine take the A2 to Castlerock\, Downhill and past Benone. The competition area will be clearly sign-posted to the right off this main road. \n\n\n\nCar Parking\n\n\n\nThe parking area will be available from 9.30am and will be signposted to the right on the approach to the competition area. All participants must show their car park passes (which will be emailed out) to gain entry. Please have photographic identification available to show if requested. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nToilets\n\n\n\nToilets will be available at the parking next to the assembly area. Limited toilets will be available at the start. \n\n\n\nAssembly Area\n\n\n\nThe assembly area is adjacent to the parking area. Gazebos will be available for competitors to share. Very limited space will be available for club tents. There will be a good view of the elite course spectator controls from the assembly area and part of the walk to the start. \n\n\n\nEnquiries\n\n\n\nEnquiries will be adjacent to download in the Assembly Area. Loan SI-cards can be collected from here. \n\n\n\nRelay teams \n\n\n\nThese must be must registered at enquiries before 16.00. \n\n\n\nColour Courses\n\n\n\nLight Green\, Orange and Yellow maps must be booked in advance of the competition. NO ENTRY ON THE DAY. \n\n\n\nTerrain\n\n\n\nOpen sand dunes\, generally low lying with a maximum rise of approximately 20m and with some extremely intricate areas. Runnability varies from very fast to tough. In some areas (mapped as vegetation slow running) progress is hindered by low growing prickly Burnet Rose. Gaiters or other similar leg protection is recommended. \n\n\n\nOut of Bounds areas\n\n\n\nAreas over-printed on the maps with purple cross-hatching are out of bounds. Please also note that all fields adjoining the competition area are out of bounds also. \n\n\n\nFences and Crossing Points\n\n\n\nWhere fences on the map are overprinted in purple as being uncrossable\, they must not be crossed. At these locations crossing points have been provided and must be used. \n\n\n\nMapping Notes\n\n\n\nAll areas used by the courses were resurveyed in September 2024\, primarily to pick up additional paths\, fences and vegetation. Symbols have been updated to ISOM 2017-2 standard except for contours and form-lines which have been made slightly thinner to improve readability. Military targets are represented by the standard black “x” symbol. Flagpoles are represented by the standard black “o” symbol. Prominent trees have been mapped using the standard large and small prominent tree symbols. Be aware that this does not mean that every isolate tree is mapped (“prominence is in the eye of the beholder\, who in this case is the mapper!”). \n\n\n\n\nScale 1:10000 with 2.5m contour interval for Courses 1 – 6.\n\n\n\nScale 1:7500 with 2.5m contour interval for Courses 7 – 15.\n\n\n\nScale 1:7500 with 2.5m contour interval for Yellow\, Orange and Light Green courses.\n\n\n\n\nPrevious map from 2008\n\n\n\n\nClassic Course / Class final details \n\n\n\nCourseClassCONTROLSlengthScale1M21E3915.91:10\,000   2M18E\, M20E279.61:10\,000 W21E 3W18E\, W20E226.71:10\,000   4M35\, M40\, M45249.11:10\,000 M21L 5M50217.71:10\,000   6M16226.41:10\,000 W35  W21L\, M21S    7M55175.51:7\,500 W16\, W40  M18S\, M20S .8 M60165.3 1:7\,500.9M65164.71:7\,500 W45\, W50 10M70124.01:7\,500 W55\, W60\, W65  W21S    11M75\, M80\, M85133.11:7\,500 W70 12W75\, W80\, W85102.01:7\,500   13M14\, W14144.01:7\,500 W18S\, W20S  Light Green    14M12\, W12112.51:7\,500 Orange 15M10\, W10112.01:7\,500 Yellow Non Championship classes are in italics\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nA separate course for M60 (course 8) has been added to accommodate the larger than expected entry within the start window. All windblown trees are mapped. \n\n\n\nThe event will feature artificial barriers to help intensify route choice. All Courses will feature these. \n\n\n\nIn the terrain\, they will be physically marked with a double line of red and white tape with notices attached. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn the map artificial barriers will be clearly marked using a purple line. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThese all are all singular strands\, ie not ‘maze’ type barriers. Above are a few examples of how these will appear on the map. There are approx 4 of these across the whole area. \n\n\n\nExample Competitor Barrier\n\n\n\nThese barriers are strictly uncrossable and must be treated as such throughout the course. Runners must navigate around them—plan your routes accordingly! \n\n\n\nThere are a number of obvious pipelines in the campus which have been mapped as prominent line features. They are above head height and can easily be passed underneath. \n\n\n\nCompetitors should be aware that narrow passageways will be used. Please approach these with caution\, and KEEP LEFT to avoid collisions. \n\n\n\nMap\n\n\n\nAll Courses will use an ISSprOM 2019 standard A4 1:4 000 scale map with 2.5m contours. Park is signposted off the A6 at the first junction west of Dungiven where it crosses under the B74. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nParking\n\n\n\nParking will be behind Learmount Coumminity where we have accees to additional overflow hard standing. Please leave the spaces in front of the centre for local people and park as directed. \n\n\n\nVenue \n\n\n\nLearmount Wood is located adjacent to Park village which nestles at the foot of Sawel Mountain. The forest boasts a mixture of pine and deciduous trees\, including a lovely section of Beech and a wide variety of habitats. The paths in and around the forest are not overly manicured which does tend to present the forest in a more rugged and natural light. Other interesting features of the forest\, apart from the beauty and tranquillity of the woods\, are the Castle and The River Faughan. \n\n\n\nThe River Faughan\n\n\n\nStorm Damage\n\n\n\nMature Scots Pines were hit particularly hard\n\n\n\nDespite extensive storm damage the wood is generally runnable. Courses have been planned to skirt the worst areas of damage. Where runners have to pass between felled areas red and white tape have been use to mark the best path. These points will be shown on courses using the optional crossing point symbol. \n\n\n\nThere are many individual trees down and runners will need to negotiate these on most woodland sections. \n\n\n\nSolid areas of storm damage are indicated with a dark green hatch overprint and should be considered totally impassible. \n\n\n\nShould there be a Met Office yellow warning or above for wind on the day of the event – the event will be postponed. \n\n\n\nStorm Damage and a marked route symbol\n\n\n\nEntry Fees\n\n\n\n MemberNon-MemberSenior (aged 21 or over)£12£16Junior or Student£6£8Maximum charge for a family*£30£40\n\n\n\nMember means you are a member of a BOF\, IOA or IOF Orienteering Club. \n\n\n\n*For beginner groups doing a course together\, you only need to enter one name per map and SI Card. It also has been updated in February this year to reflect the damage from the winter storms. \n\n\n\nThe scale for all courses will be 1:7500. \n\n\n\nSample showing storm damage green hatching and taped routes\n\n\n\n\n\nRoad crossings\n\n\n\nThere are no road crossings for the white\, yellow\, orange and light green courses. \n\n\n\nThe short green and green courses have a 30m route along the grass verge of a public road (facing oncoming traffic). \n\n\n\n\nThe blue and brown course also have this section plus two more public road crossings. The final crossing is over a fast straight section of the road and a three minute timed-out has been provided to allow competitors to carefully walk across. \n\n\n\n\n\nToilets\n\n\n\nToilet facilities will be available in the community centre. \n\n\n\n\nHazards\n\n\n\n\nStorm damage – see section above.\n\n\n\nParents should be aware the area is bounded by a river which flows very powerfully in flood. All course will have sections along this river.\n\n\n\nGreen and Short Green runners have a 30m route along the grass verge of a public road (facing oncoming traffic)\,\n\n\n\nCourses from Light Green upward will cross an small un-bridged stream.\n\n\n\nBrown and Blue runners will cross public roads on their course. SUMMARY:NI Colour Series 5 (2024) Moydamlaght
DESCRIPTION:View from above the Forest\n\n\n\nTravelling to Moydamlaght\n\n\n\nIf approaching from the A6 Glenshane Road look out for the Moneyneany sign\n\n\n\nPlease use the toilets at the nearby Community Centre\n\n\n\nParking\n\n\n\nEvent parking will be in the small forest car park and along an adjacent forest track. Parking is very limited so please share a car if possible. \n\n\n\nParking is limited\n\n\n\nThe official forest car park has been greatly reduced in size and is now very small. Once this is full we will direct cars up the forest track just south the car park entrance. Some cars can park on the hard standing / turning point area others will be able to turn and park along the track facing the exit. \n\n\n\nAlternatively there is ample parking at the nearby community centre if you can park and share a single car to the forest. \n\n\n\nEntries\n\n\n\nThe maps are printed but we have spares so if you missed the deadline contact us with the course(s) you are interested in and if we can we will send you a late entry link. \n\n\n\n\nEnter Online\n\n\n\nEdit your Entry\n\n\n\nView Entry Lists\n\n\n\n\nClosing Date for Entries Monday 26th August 22:30 \n\n\n\n\nEvent Queries / Late Entry Requests\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n	Contact NWOC\n&nbsp\nYour Name (required)\n \n \n	Your Email (required)\n \nYour Query\n \n \n	\n \n	Name and email address will only be used to respond to your query\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Fees\n\n\n\n\nJuniors £6 (NIOA members £5)\n\n\n\nFull-time Student £6 (NIOA /BOF/IOA members £5)\n\n\n\nSeniors £12 (NIOA /BOF/IOA members £10)\n\n\n\nFamily Multiple Individual runs £30 (NIOA /BOF/IOA members £25)\n\n\n\nGroup / Family Runs – Junior rate – please contact us before entering via the form below.\n\n\n\n\nStarts and Finish\n\n\n\nStarts from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm. \n\n\n\nThere is a 10-15 minute walk from the forest car park to the start. The finish is adjacent to the parking. \n\n\n\nAll competitors must download even if they do not complete their courses. \n\n\n\nCourses Close at 3.00pm. \n\n\n\n\nPlanner’s Notes\n\n\n\nMoydamlaght Forest is definitely on a hillside but there are some really lovely areas of white forest with good contour detail\, too good to miss before it gets the chop. The courses are slightly shorter than standard to take account of the hills\, generally climbing in the first part before the slalom down\, in mostly runnable forest. Areas of fallen trees which are skirted by the courses are denoted on the map by green “X”s\, whilst individual fallen trees are not mapped. In the south eastern parts of the forest old lines of thinning extraction tracks introduce light with associated ground vegetation. These are visible on the ground\, easily traversible\, but only the most significant clearings have been indicated on the map. \n\n\n\nThe choice of map scale at 1:7500\, though not as per guidelines\, is to take account of low light levels in some areas of the forest combined with fine detail. Map symbol sizes are scaled accordingly. Control circle scaling has been slightly reduced to take account of the twisting nature of the courses\, with circle diameter corresponding to 65m on the ground. It’s a privilege to be out there\, so we hope you enjoy the event. \n\n\n\n\nElectronic Punching\n\n\n\nSportident Electronic punching with beacon mode enabled for SI Air on all controls but not on the start and finish boxes which must be “dipped” in the traditional manner. Ordinary SI cards will work on all controls as normal. \n\n\n\nPassive SI dippers will be available to borrow at enquiries for those who do not have their own. \n\n\n\nMap\n\n\n\nAll courses will run on a new LIDAR based 1:7500 map \n\n\n\nCourse Details (provisional)\n\n\n\n Distance (km)Climb (m)Brown6.6 270Blue5.4 200Green4.2 150Short Green3.0 145Light Green3.1 90Orange2.3 80Yellow1.5 20White1.1 10\n\n\n\nFull leg cover recommended. \n\n\n\nToilets / Cafe\n\n\n\nToilets will be available at the nearby An Ráth Dubh Centre. Please choose your course accordingly (even if this is not the course linked to your age class for the NI Champs). \n\n\n\nAs this is a night event competitors must be in age groups M/W16 and above. \n\n\n\nAll competitors must carry a whistle and head torch.  Reflective clothes are strongly recommended (to aid location of lost / missing runners should this be necessary). Also carrying a spare torch is recommended in case of battery failure etc. \n\n\n\nYou may be required to carry a cagoule\, depending on weather conditions. \n\n\n\nPlease also read the specific hazards section at the foot of the page. \n\n\n\n\n\nCourse lengths\n\n\n\nCourseLength (Km)Climb (Metres)Short2.790Medium3.6120Long4.1155\n\n\n\n\n\nNight Championship Age Classes\n\n\n\nPaid up 2024 members of NI Orienteering Clubs are eligible to compete to be NI Champion in their age groups. This is particularly important to observe for night orienteering. \n\n\n\n\nMap\n\n\n\nAn updated 1:5000 map of Ballykelly Forest will be used by all courses. \n\n\n\n\nQueries\n\n\n\nPlease use the form below for any queries or special requests: \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n	Contact NWOC\n&nbsp\nYour Name (required)\n \n \n	Your Email (required)\n \nYour Query\n \n \n	\n \n	Name and email address will only be used to respond to your query\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOfficials\n\n\n\n\nAnthony McGonigle\n\n\n\nDavid Blair\n\n\n\nDes Fletcher\n\n\n\n\n\nToilets\n\n\n\nThere will be no toilets at the event. Competitors previously attending the Score Champs / AGM in St Columb’s Park should use the facilities there. \n\n\n\nDogs\n\n\n\nDogs must not accompany runners on courses. \n\n\n\nTerrain Notes\n\n\n\nWhile Ballykelly is a small forest\, it has a complex network of tracks and small paths running through a diverse patchwork of forest types. Around the periphery there is a band of naturally regenerating traditional mixed forest with the core being comprised of blocks of coniferous plantation. This central area has matured well in recent years and now offers a good degree of runnability. Visibility varies\, particularly in the natural forest area where holly bushes etc. make straight line running difficult and careful compass work will pay dividends. \n\n\n\nThe area is used by mountain bikers who have contributed to the path network and provide a number of rough bridges across ditches – these should always be treated with caution. \n\n\n\nHazards\n\n\n\nOld Quarry\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nQuarry: There is a steep sided old quarry\, quite close to a main internal forest road (see map segment above). All courses have been planned that competitors should not be approaching from above as part of their route choice. The top of the crag is cordoned off by yellow and black tape.If competitors see black/yellow tape\, then they  should stop and check their location.\n\n\n\n Bridges made by mountain bikers: There are a number of these\, we cannot guarantee how well built they are\, they are mostly composed of wood\, and can be particularly slippery\n\n\n\nSlip and Trip: Usual hazards of a forested area\, that are less visible by night

If all space here is filled then there is additional parking on the opposite on the road – please take care crossing this busy road. \nRegistration will operate from 11:00am. \nCourses Close at 3pm. \nStart and Finish are adjacent and are 5 minutes walk from parking/registration. \nEntry Fees: \n\nJuniors £5 (NIOA members £4)\nOAP/ Unwaged £8.00   (NIOA members £6)\nSeniors £10.00    (NIOA members £8)\nFamily £25  (NIOA members £20)\n\nMap: \nAll courses run on a newly updated version of the previous 1:5000 map. Green\, Blue and Brown will also get to run on a brand new 1:5000 Downhill North map (see event plan above). \nCourse Details: \n\n\n\nBrown\n7.4km\n260m\n\n\nBlue\n5.9km\n210m\n\n\nGreen\n4.5km\n125m\n\n\nLight Green\n3.6km\n170m\n\n\nLong Orange\n4.2km\n150m\n\n\nOrange\n2.6km\n105m\n\n\nYellow\n1.9km\n60m\n\n\nWhite\n1.6km\n25m\n\n\n\nToilets are available nearby at Downhill Beach car park. \nDogs should be kept on a lead. \nCourse Notes:\nThe event will offer classic forest orienteering with the original Downhill Forest area now supplemented for Green\, Blue and Brown runners with a completely new Forest area Downhill North. Runners on these courses will receive 2 maps printed on opposite side of a single piece of waterproof paper. Control descriptions for the full course will be printed on the front of the map and available loose at registration. The reverse side of the map will have descriptions for just that section. \nRunability on the main Downhill map is generally very good and although significant areas of green undergrowth hatching are used – where these feature on courses they generally are made up of ferns and brashings (rather than the thick brambles and nettles previously common in this area). \nIn the Downhill North there are still large blocks of closed hatched impassible vegetation. Courses are planned to skirt around these and a taped cleared crossing is marked on the Blue and Brown courses where a wide overgrown ride must be crossed. \nHazards\n\nParents should be aware the forest contains a lake and several streams which can rise significantly at times of heavy rain.\nFor Green\, Blue and Brown \, the Downhill North will be accessed via a taped route and a short run along a minor road – please take extra care here.\nThere is an area of very steep\, slippery\, muddy terrain which has been marked with a purple hazard hatching on all maps – please avoid.\nThe area contains a number of mountain bike tracks (mostly disused) which generally afford good running but are extremely steep in places.\n\n
