Anthony McGonigle wins Silva Award

Many Congratulations to Anthony McGonigle on being awarded the Silva Award by the British Orienteering Federation for his massive contribution to our sport. This is awarded annually to a person who has made a very significant contribution to orienteering over a period of years, with an emphasis on ‘field’ activities rather than committee work.   From the BOF website:

Awarded to Anthony McGonigle of North West Orienteering Club

Anthony has been at the forefront of orienteering in Northern Ireland for over 40 years. As a pupil then teacher at Limavady Grammar School he has nurtured young orienteers at the school to compete at numerous competitions. He produced the first 5 colour map in NI back in 1977and is still an active surveyor and cartographer to this day. He is someone who goes about his obvious love of orienteering with humility, always keen to provide help and guidance to less experienced planners, controllers, organisers and fledgling mappers.

Primary School Orienteering Championships

For the first time in decades, the North West Orienteering Club is organising Primary School Championships for local primary schools. Pupils, parents and staff are encouraged to come along and represent their schools at any of the venues. The best three pupil scores will be added to the best three adult scores and the school with the highest score will be crowned champions for 2017.

There will be three venues, Garvagh Forest on Thursday 18th May, Ballykelly Forest on Thursday 25th May and University of Ulster on Thursday 1st June. Schools can choose which venue to enter. The cost of entry is £1 for juniors and £2 for adults and £5 for a family. All the events start between 6.30 and 7.30pm. If interested then please contact your child’s school.
